iTunes on two computers with one iPod
iTunes is a real pain in the neck.
Should I get some Windows 3rd party iPod software?

(Page 2 of 2)22. I was going to put my entire music library in Subversion SVN (http://subversion.tigris.org/)but because it always keeps pristine copies, which doubles your disk space on each 'client' - that wasn't going to work for me.
Instead I opted for using "Unison File Synchronizer" (http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/index.html) which basically synchronizes directories across machines. It's platform independent and bi-directional so if you download podcasts on one machine it syncs to the other no problem.
I'll be posting a how-to on my site (http://i.ndustrio.us) sometime later in the week but in the meantime you may want to check out the product.

23. Jason specifically mentioned moving podcasts from multiple machines onto one iPod. You can't do that in iTunes 7.0 -- and I'm talking about podcasts only -- despite the advances in manually managing music and movie files. They seem to have missed the boat on podcasts. Not exactly sure why. Hopefully a future update of the software will address podcasts the same way they address music and movie files.

24. Do you have a network? The way I would do it is to load all your songs onto the shared network folder in "My network places" on you laptop. In iTunes, click "file," then "add folder to Library" then browse for your folder. It is always easier to keep your songs all in this one folder. That's about the only way I know.

25. I use Winamp and mlipod to sync my iPod on multiple computers. I just can't stand iTunes. In many ways, Apple's 'i'ware is just as bad as kludge from Microsoft, and no, Apple-heads who know nothing else, it's not the only game in town, nor the only way of doing things.

26. The popularity of ipod is best proof for stupidity of human race. I'm glad that I got this piece of junk for free.

28. Regarding the downloading of podcasts from two different computers to one iPod, you CAN do it. Just do the Manually Manage Music and Video, then drag and drop your downloaded podcast episode right onto your iPod. Now here's the incredibly stupid part. Your podcast is now on your iPod, BUT only when you go to your Playlist->Recently Added. iTunes 7 will NOT add the new podcast you downloaded into your Podcast directory.

30. I went to the US recently and bought a MacBook and two ITouch players as presents for my family. My laptop runs Ubuntu, my wifes laptop runs windows XP, my desktop windows, and now I have a Mac. I have wireless lan and a big network drive and until now have had no problems with MP3 players. I can honestly say that ITunes is a complete load of rubbish, why they make such a sexy little device as the Itouch, and then render it next to useless with such brain dead software I can not imagine. Is there any way to simply see an ITouch as a straight forward simple file system ?

31. I've been going through the comments trying to find one that relates to my issue but haven't really found one yet.
I've got my desktop and my laptop, both running Windows. I've also got an external hard drive. All my music is stored on my external hard drive. I'm currently in another state from my desktop (where I originally started iTunes). I've tried plugging my external hard drive into my new laptop and I've been able to move all my music onto the iTunes on my laptop but it still comes up asking if I won't to erase the old and input the new. I've clicked no. I just want to make sure that I'm doing something right. Also, I created many Play Lists on my desktop, is it possible to transfer those Play Lists from my iPod to my laptop iTunes?
Any one out there know what I need to do?

33. i love it when people complain about itunes and then spend hours trying to figure out inferior ways around using it. Itunes is a great simple piece of software for regular non-tech people...and if people were really as tech savvy as they pretend they are on these boards they would have figured out the easiest, most obvious work-around to this issue....don't keep your itunes library on your computer. Go spend like 30 bucks, get yourself an external hard drive and put it there. then simply go into itunes on all your machines and change the library location to that drive instead of a folder. This way itunes thinks you only have one computer. It can be done cross-platform too but its a bit more involved especially if one of the boxes runs Linux. Remember your going to have to merge your library files, you have to be running the same version of itunes on all your machines, and if you download from itunes both computers have to be authorized.
~The guy that has been doing this since O/S 9.1
p.s. if your using the same platform across the board you can just install intunes on the same external hardrive you keep your music on and run it from there.

21. Cheers to Diego asking for someone to string all the shows together into one file. If this becomes a reality, can you also strip the first 4:20 out of each episode so we can lose the sponsor blathering. I'll take 30 seconds of it, but more than 4 minutes is crazy. I wonder if the sponsors are getting any flack?
